ESREF 2014 the 25th anniversary of the European Symposium on Reliability of Electron Devices, Failure Physics and Analysis will take place in Berlin (Germany) from September 29th to October 2nd, 2014.

The International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves (IRMMW-THz), is the oldest and largest continuous forum devoted to the science and technology of long-wavelength radiation. The scope of the conference includes all scientific and technological activities from millimeter-waves to the THz regime and on to the far-infrared region of the electromagnetic spectrum. This covers a very wide range of disciplines, encompassing everything from micro- and nano-scale devices and structures to large-scale accelerators and tokamaks and their applications. Presentations at this conference address issues ranging from basic physics, chemistry, electrical engineering and materials science to problems in high frequency circuits and systems, communications, antennas and optics, imaging and spectroscopy, and much, much more. The conference brings together scientists and technologists from more than 30 countries and typically hosts 600-700 participants. Contributed papers are archived on IEEEXplore, and IEEE is a long term technical co-sponsor of the conference series – currently celebrating 40 years since the first event was held in Atlanta, Georgia in 1974. Workshop on Intra-Operative Assessment of Tumor-Resection Margins – Pre-operatively, many imaging techniques are available that help a surgeon in planning a tumour resection procedure. This is in stark contrast with the situation in the operating room where the surgeon has to rely on his eyes and hands. As a consequence many resections are inadequate (not all tumour removed, or with a margin smaller than intended). A recent detailed retrospective survey of head and neck cancer procedures at Erasmus-university Medical Centre Rotterdam and Leiden University Medical Centre even showed that 85% (!) of procedures resulted in inadequate resections. Many other tumour resection procedures have high rates of inadequate results. Surgical success rates in terms of complete tumour resection must improve.
Optical techniques such as fluorescence imaging, NIR imaging, and optical spectroscopies (a.o. Raman spectroscopy) can be used to provide detailed tissue classification in real-time. Moreover the photonics technologies on which they are based are highly suitable for deployment in the operating room. There is much research activity in this field. Photonics-based technologies offer great opportunities to provide the surgeon with real-time information during a procedure. The clinical need is undisputed.
